Composition skills, observing tone and beginning to use paint. Week 1 of our 3 week still life project.

Last term was more expressive and about freeing up our drawing and observational skills, but 'Still Life' is the first of our Traditional Projects for this term. (Portraits and Life drawing next.) 

We will be focusing on introducing basic painting materials and techniques, while practicing our composition, lighting and creative decision making skills; and observing and rendering tone. 

The class did really well with their 'thumbnail sketches' and using their boxes and lights to create shadows and maximise tonal range, and everyone has a base coat ready for next week.

We used black and white acrylic paint, canvass effect paper and large flat headed brushes.
